“Healthy” is definitely a lifestyle choice and the more I learn about what particular foods do to my body, the more I feel like I deserve to treat my body the best I can. I try to eat as many plant-based meals as possible"
— KAYLA CARLYLE, CEO OF CHEEKY CARLYLE SWIM
Q: What was the inspiration for starting CCS? What’s the story behind your brand?
A: Many swimwear brands out there today conform to singular body-types, so I found it extremely difficult finding a well-fitted swimsuit, especially the top. So, I created my own! I had always known I wanted to have my own business, it just so happens that swimwear found me.
Q: What’s your brand tagline? What is your brand all about?
A: Flirty with a tomboy sexiness, Cheeky Carlyle Swim is for your adventure-seeking traveler who loves to wander. We are all about empowering women through inclusion and positive body-image!
Q: What’s been the biggest challenge in your journey building CCS?
A: Well, starting off, there are so many challenges you will face. It can seem like anything and everything can be a challenge- it's all about perspective though and knowing (and reminding yourself) that this is a process. A few main focuses of mine right now are: consistency with production and social media exposure.
Q: What do you enjoy most about working on building your own company?
A: I love when I get a notification, an email, a text, a tag, etc with a happy customer rocking my suit. I am creating a community and lifestyle where we all treat each other a little better and lift each other up a little higher. Not to mention, by being eco-friendly, we’re treating the earth a little nicer too.
Q: How do you stay healthy and bikini body ready?
A: “Healthy” is definitely a lifestyle choice and the more I learn about what particular foods do to my body, the more I feel like I deserve to treat my body the best I can. I try to eat as many plant-based meals as possible and I workout at least three times a week. I really love jiu-jitsu and my bikini body guide.
Q: Any words of wisdom for fellow #girlbosses (50 L.A. Women Startup Founders You Should Know - Built in L.A.?
A: Starting your own business is tough. You will constantly have moments of exhilaration and doubt. The best advice I can give you is to take it easy on yourself, know that you're doing something that so few people do in their lives (go after their dreams/goals). Stay connected and hang out with your loved ones frequently, trust yourself, don't be afraid to ask for help for free from people you know, and to just enjoy the ride. Even looking back at a year ago today, I am so proud of what we have accomplished. So many of my friends and family had strong opinions of how I should go about starting my business, but at the end of the day, it's going to be YOU typing these emails, YOU posting to social media, YOU responding to questions, YOU creating. YOU can do it. Also, allow yourself some days off to do things other than tend to your business. Oh yeah, and use google at lot.
Q: What does a day in your life look like?
A: Create a to-do list! The most fun work days start with packing up and heading to the post office to mail out packages, then hitting up a coffee shop where I’ll get several really good, focused, hours of work done replying to emails, working on more marketing strategies, creating content, editing, phone calls and learning new things. Then, if I’m lucky I’ll get an hour in at the beach. Next, I’ll go workout, shower up, grab some lunch, run a few errands and then head back home or maybe grab a treat with a friend. After dinner, I’ll usually check my emails and respond to anything involving my manufacturer (because of timezone challenges) and then have the rest of the night to spend with loved ones.
